  7. /rdb is a RDBMS and applications development system for UNIX. Unlike other 4GL
  8. systems, /rdb is an extension of UNIX -- making the full power of UNIX
  9. available in applications development. Relations, or tables, are regular ASCII
  10. files. /rdb commands are shell-level programs which read tables from the
  11. standard input and write tables on the standard output. All relational
  12. operators are supported, as well as fast access methods, a vi-like forms
  13. editor, a powerful report generator, menus, and data transformation
  14. utilities

  16. With /rdb, views, reports, and even complex applications are implemented as
  17. shell programs with a few lines of commands and pipes. Because ad hoc queries
  18. are made at the shell level, development time is greatly reduced and there is
  19. little CPU overhead

  21. Close integration with UNIX allows /rdb to go wherever UNIX goes. As such, /rdb
  22. supports applications requiring networks, client-server interactions, and X
